Project Spotlight L. Gale Lemerand Student Center at Daytona State College

This 75,000 square feet steel framed building has many stunning features including hiding the support for the cantilever in the stair tower enclosure and a bronze-clad gateway acting as two outreached arms that welcome and embrace visitors. Using steel allowed the team to create a 90-ft-tall portal to separate each wing, while also having the ability to resist hurricane-force winds.

The American Institute of Steel Construction’s Innovative Design in Engineering and Architecture with Structural Steel (IDEAS²) Award program recognizes projects that illustrate the exciting possibilities of building with structural steel. Judges award less than ten IDEAS² Awards in the country every year for Excellence in Engineering, Architecture, Sustainable Design and Construction, Adaptive Reuse, and Constructability.
